U.S. Senator Luther Strange, Chairman of the Subcommittee on Nutrition, Agricultural Research, and Specialty Crops, on Tuesday joined congressional colleagues in calling on the Government Accountability Office (GAO) to investigate error rates and fraud in the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) National School Lunch Program and School Breakfast Program. The delegation sent a letter to GAO Comptroller General Gene Dodaro, outlining findings by the USDA Office of the Inspector General of erroneous records and approximately $2.7 billion in improper payments annually in existing programs.

"Thousands of deserving Alabama students rely on publicly-funded breakfast and lunch programs to sustain them through the school day, and I am committed to ensuring that hunger does not stand in the way of our children's success. My colleagues and I are charged with speaking for those in need, as well as ensuring that taxpayer funds are used in the most efficient and effective manner, and today's letter represents an important step in the Senate's oversight of the federal bureaucracy."
